Eagles VS. Chiefs Super Bowl LVII
The stage is set. The Philadelphia Eagles will be taking on the Kansas City Chiefs in Arizona at Super Bowl LVII. It’s a showdown that features two of the NFL’s top 2 offenses and two of the best teams in the NFL all year.
For most of the year, both Philadelphia and Kansas City have looked like two of the best teams of their respective conferences, both going 14-3, but besides their records, both teams have been consistently winning games in elite fashion and have shown signs of Super Bowl stature.
The Eagles took on the dangerous San Francisco 49ers in an NFC Championship game, hosted at the Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, PA, at 3 PM Sunday, which in many fans and critics eyes would be a Super Bowl match up if both teams didn’t play in the same conference.
The 49ers coming into the Sunday’s matchup were on a 12 game winning streak since adding RB Christian McCaffery in the middle of the NFL season in a trade with the Carolina Panthers and had beaten two quality teams in the playoffs in Seattle and Dallas prior to playing Philly.
The 49ers boasted the NFL’s best defense and were a top 5 offense, the number 2 seed in the NFC and had a lot of fire power on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. Philadelphia had the same.
The Eagles were the number 1 overall seed in the NFC and NFL altogether and boasted the NFL’s number 2 defense and number 3 offense and looked to be unstoppable all season.
The score: 31-7 for Philadelphia.
Rookie QB turned phenomenon for the 49ers, Brock Purdy injured his throwing elbow 7 minutes into the first quarter on a Haason Reddick sack and fumble for the Eagles and the game seemed to be over from that point on as the 49ers were forced to play with 15 year fourth string QB Josh Johnson, who had never thrown for more than 600 yards in a single season his entire career, now playing in the NFC Championship game.
Purdy’s suffered injury later was described as an ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) tear and an MRI has determined that Purdy will require surgery. The 49ers defense and offense played an inspired 2nd quarter without Purdy, however, their valiant attempt to stay in the game fell short due to too many mistakes on offense and defense, with turnovers and penalties coming at the end of the 2nd quarter and leading into the second half.
The Eagles took advantage of short field opportunities and turnovers and dominated the overmatched 49ers from that point on, punching in their ticket to Super Bowl LVII.
On the other end of the conference in the AFC Championship Game, Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs had much more of a competitive game and challenge from Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals in a game that came down to the wire.
The Chiefs beat the Bengals 23-20 with a last second field goal, aided by a roughing the passer penalty that won the game at the end of regulation. The game was competitive all throughout as the Chiefs got out to an early 13-3 advantage.
The Bengals made their way back into the game with a turnover and both teams continued to go back and forth, trading touchdowns that locked them in at 20-20 score in the fourth quarter.
The Chiefs got the ball back from the Bengals at the 50 yard line with 30 seconds left in the game, after a great 29 yard punt return set up by Skyy Moore. Patrick Mahomes’ 5 yard QB run on 3rd and 4 got the Chiefs a first down at the Bengals 42, but a 15 yard roughing the passer penalty set the Chiefs up at the 27 yard line for a 45 yard game winning field goal that sealed the Chiefs opportunity to go to Super Bowl LVII against the Eagles.
As both teams get healthy, this game looks to serve as one of the better showdowns in recent Super Bowl history and makes for a very entertaining game to watch. Tell us who you are going with in this match up.
