Boxing Superstar Ryan Garcia Suspended 1 Year For Testing Positive For Illegal Substance
Boxing superstar Ryan Garcia won’t be fighting for a year after testing positive for using Ostarine in preparation for his April 20th fight against Undisputed Super Lightweight Champion Devin Haney, in a fight that millions of fans witnessed Garcia brutally dominate and knock down Haney several times on his way to a 12 round victory by way of majority decision.
Ryan Garcia was suspended yesterday by the New York State Athletic Commission after he tested positive for the illegal substance. His win has now been overturned and he has been ordered to pay a fine of $10 thousand, while Haney’s loss has been now ruled a no contest.
According to ESPN’s boxing reporter/columnist Dan Rafael, Garcia reportedly also tested positive for Ostarine in one of the New York Commission's drugs tests (in addition to the two positive VADA tests for Ostarine already reported), meaning he had three positive tests leading to his one-year ban.
Haney seemed pleased by the overturning of his loss and the suspension of Garcia, taking to X (formally known as Twitter) to thank the NYSAC for it’s ruling and has been posting clips and comments on his X account rejoicing the matter.
While Haney does have supporters on his side voicing their opinions, such as female superstar boxer Claressa Shields who stated, “Sit yo ass down Ryan! Congrats @Realdevinhaney! He’s suspended a year! Rightfully so!”, many fans are still sticking with the idea that Haney was beat fair and square.
Some fans also don’t believe that the ruling erases much about Haney’s capabilities as a boxer.
One fan by the account name of @Key21Digital on X stated, “Your numbers on paper don't change what we saw, and what we saw is the only thing that matters.”
Another fan by the account name of @Don_Lamar_ said, “That L ain’t going nowhere dog” with a laughing emoji and a picture of Haney faced down on the ring canvas as after being floored by a left hook from Garcia midway through their fight.
How do you feel about Garcia’s suspension? Was his suspension fair, or did the NYSAC make a mistake in rewarding Haney for a lackluster performance, while gifting him another opportunity at being undefeated?
