Jaron “Boots” Ennis stops Xander Zayas in the 7th round to capture 154-Pound junior-middleweight title
Jaron "Boots" Ennis stopped Xander Zayas in the 7th round of last night's fight at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY to become the unified middleweight champion in the 154-pound division.
Ennis displayed aggression, poise, grit, toughness (in taking Zayas best punches in the third round of the fight), but most importantly he showed determination with his ability to finish the show & get a stoppage in the 7th round as Zayas went down on one knee, seeming to wave the flag while simultaneously having his corner of coaches doing the exact same thing. Zayas' corner stopped the fight and "Boots" celebrated in excitement as he’s ready ready to move forward to Vergil Ortiz next and bigger fights in the future.
"Let's make it happen baby. Bring on Vergil, it don't really matter who it is," Boots stated on DAZN when asked who he wants to fight next.
Ennis showed tremendous skill as a fighter and showed that he can take tough punches in a fight and continue to pound away. It is the true definition of the saying "the heart of a champion" and with that, he inserts himself in the top 5 pound for pound best fighters of the world conversation and on the list.
There have been mentions of a fight between Ennis and undisputed 168-pound champion of the world Terence “Bud” Crawford, but if that fight was to happen, it would more than likely have to be at 160 pounds, as Crawford previously stated in an interview with Seconds Out that he would not be returning to the 154-pound division.
“No, I ain’t going down to 154,” Crawford stated when asked if he would possibly face Ennis or any other fighter in the 154-pound division, and that it would take a paycheck of at least $100 million to come back and entertain a fight at the 160-pound division; but that the check would have to be for a mega fight.
If Crawford can get the paycheck he wants, then the fans of boxing may get the fight they want between Crawford and Ennis sometime this year.
Ennis, however, seems content to continue his quest of taking over the 154-pound division and doesn’t seem to be worried about chasing any fights, besides the fights his promoter Eddie Hearn selects for him.
“Talk to me Eddie. Whoever Eddie want, that’s who we gonna get,” he stated when discussing future opponents after his victory of Zayas.
While whatever fight next for Ennis in the future is unknown, one thing that can be for sure is that it will be entertaining and a show.
